The Toyota Hybrid System - The Engine - 1
-
Although a hybrid power train could use a Diesel engine, Toyota and Honda
have both chosen gasoline engines.
-
They are more acceptable in Japan and the U.S.A., where diesel engines
are little used in cars (other than taxis).
-
They are better for meeting tight emission requirements – especially for
NOx and particulates.
-
They are easier to start, after stopping when stationary, and during on-off
cycling of the engine.
-
The cylinder pressures are lower, so the engines are lighter, with less
internal friction.
-
They are much quieter, so that on-off cycling of the engine is much less
obtrusive.
-
They can be made for less - especially the fuel system, since it operates
at far lower pressures.
